Nuthatch was painted with watercolor on sanded pastel paper. I applied watercolor as an underpainting for subsequent layers of soft pastels but the effect was so vibrant and realistic I decided not to apply pastel and a new relationship of ground to paint was born. Nuthatches are the non-conformists in our backyard aviary. They are the ones who insist on climbing/hopping headfirst down the sides of trees. It is one of the easiest ways to distinguish them from the crowd. That, plus their striking black, white, and grey plumage.

This nuthatch sits on a pear tree branch blooming in spring.
