Goldfinch was painted with watercolor on sanded pastel paper. The series of bird paintings began with this one. I applied the watercolor as an underpainting for subsequent layers of soft pastels but the effect was so vibrant and realistic I decided not to apply pastel and a new relationship of ground to paint was born. There is a time in the summer when it seems that the gold finch population explodes and becomes the majority of who we see at our feeders. All the flashes of yellow make us feel temporarily transported to a tropical climate.

This goldfinch sits among blooming thistle, ready for a snack.
