Bluebird was painted with watercolor on sanded pastel paper. I applied watercolor as an underpainting for subsequent layers of soft pastels but the effect was so vibrant and realistic I decided not to apply pastel and a new relationship of ground to paint was born. To say I'm a bird fanatic is an understatement. They never cease to catch and hold my attention and they continually bring me unbridled joy.

This bluebird sits on a cherry branch in spring, the buds about to pop.
