Tree Swallow was painted with watercolor on sanded pastel paper. I applied watercolor as an underpainting for subsequent layers of soft pastels but the effect was so vibrant and realistic I decided not to apply pastel and a new relationship of ground to paint was born. Asking me to declare my favorite bird is like being asked what my favorite color is. Not possible. However, swallows are near the top of the list for birds whose aerial talents bring me the most joy. It amazes me how powerful and fearless these tiny creatures are. Plus, I love eavesdropping on the conversations that happen while sitting on telephone wires! Highly spirited.
